When I did apt-cache search thinkpad, I found this nice tool, after some configuration, my world become more quiet. the fan won't run at full speed all the time. To make it work, you'd follow some steps.
1 reload think_acpi with fan_control=1

we used to edit /etc/apt/sources.list to add some extra repositary, or you need use Software Sources to do it, but in Karmic, it will be more simple, like I want to use the daily build chromium
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:chromium-daily
it will add the chromium ppa and import the gpg key together.

After a daily upgrade, I found the Add/Remove application was dropped from gnome menu, so software store will unify software installation in Ubuntu, even synaptics might be replaced by app store.
